The Decrepit Village is a Location within the Underdark in Act One of Baldur's Gate 3. It is located adjacent to the Ebonlake. This area also serves as the access point to the Grymforge via the skiff at the dock.

Overview edit

The Decrepit Village occupies the central area of the Underdark, gradually descending from the average level of the region to the sandy beach of the Ebonlake. It visually consists of two levels, with ramshackle wooden structures on the upper one, and rope nettings leading down to the shore with two berths.

Decrepit Village edit

A view onto the village shackles

The village was previously the base of operations of the deep gnomes of the Ironhand clan, who ventured a mining expedition to this part of the Underdark. Eventually they were attacked by the duergar of the Clan Flameshade, who needed labor force for an excavation in Grymforge, on the opposite shore of the Ebonlake. The drow Nere Nere, a retainer of general Ketheric Thorm Ketheric Thorm, hired the Flameshades as mercenaries to reach an ancient temple and led an enslavering raid onto the gnomes. Some were killed or executed, but most part was taken to Grymforge.

In one of the ramshackles a journal belonging to Wulbren Bongle Wulbren Bongle can be found, asserting his presence in the Underdark and the probability of his being captured by the Duergar.

Just prior to the party coming to the Underdark, one of the enslaved gnomes, Thulla Thulla, managed to escape the slavers and to make it back to the village. The duergar squad sent to recapture her under command of Gekh Coal Gekh Coal wounded and poisoned her, but Thulla was able to reach the myconid colony nearby. The path leading from the colony to the village entrance features the results of the fight, being strewn with corpses of myconids, duergar, and deep gnomes.

When first entering the village, Gekh Coal and the remains of his squad are invisible. If approaching from the north, the party has the chance to pass a DC 20 Perception check check to detect the ambush. However, passing this will only reveal Gekh's location, while the other three duergar remain unseen.

Regardless of the roll success, the duergar start a conversation with the party. Gekh and his group can be killed as part of the quest Defeat the Duergar Intruders Defeat the Duergar Intruders and Avenge Glut's Circle Avenge Glut's Circle. If he is talked down from attacking, the party can help him Find the Missing Boots Find the Missing Boots. Coal will not stand down if the player character is a Deep Gnome Deep Gnome, as he considers them yet another runaway slave. If the player character is a Drow Drow, Gekh takes them at once for a follower of the Absolute, which gives them an additional option in the dialogue. Promising to help Gekh and attacking his squad afterwards, it is considered an Oathbreaking Action for Devotion Paladin Devotion Paladin characters.

Travel to Grymforge edit

The Ebonlake shore

The Ebonlake shore consists of two separate parts connected only by wooden build-ups of the village; both parts have their own berths. A skiff rests at one dock, ready to take the party to Grymforge based on the story path of their choosing. However, it cannot be used until the party somehow deals with Gekh Coal and his squad. If the boat is approached before talking to Gekh, one of his fighters, Garmor Garmor, becomes visible and alerts his commander.

After taking off towards Grymforge, in the middle of the Ebonlake, the party meet another duergar sailing patrol, led by Greymon Corsair Greymon. The dialogue with him starts automatically. He recognizes Gekh Coal's boat and demands an explanation from the player character, who must convince him to stand down or commence a fight. Alternatively, using the information from Thulla and Gekh Coal about Boots of Speed (or having them in the inventory) saves the trouble of passing rolls. Also, a successful DC 15 Athletics check allows to push Greymon into the water, which instantly kills him. If placated, Greymon jumps aboard the party's skiff and accompanies them on their way to Grymforge.

Successfully convincing Greymon to let the party pass results in party members with the Charlatan Charlatan background gaining the A Friend to All A Friend to All inspiration (granted upon reaching Grymforge). Otherwise, defeating the duergar grants the Drowned in the Dark Drowned in the Dark inspiration to party members with the Soldier Soldier background instead.

If the player character pushed Greymon into the water when talking to him in the middle of the lake, he and his crew wash up at the southern part of the beach.

Carrion Crawler Nest edit

On the opposite to the Duergar's ambush side of the village, at X: 30 Y: -238 a Carrion crawler nest can be found, resembling a bunch of holes in a steep rocky slope. Several of them are interactable, and recognizing what is what requires a DC 15 Survival check. Regardless of the result, the player character may also reach into any of holes (to no avail). If playing as / disguised disguised as a Short-height character (i.e. Dwarf Dwarf, Gnome Gnome or Halfling Halfling), another passive DC 15 Survival check is rolled. Successful second check earns the Nest Egg Nest Egg inspiration event for party members with the Outlander Outlander background and a random precious gem.
