Shadowheart can be romanced.

Act 1

In Act One, if having at least medium approval, Shadowheart may propose a (private) meeting. If accepted, it occurs later that night near a waterfall away from camp, and their relationship grows from the conversation [1]. Several dialogue choices (and skill checks) follow; exploring all of them reveals considerably more of Shadowheart's personality. After a conversation, the camera fades and returns a few hours later showing both of them laying on the ground, holding hands. Ultimately, if remaining with her for the evening and passing a passive DC 5 Insight check, the player character realizes she expects a kiss

, and can choose dialogue which leads to one. Regardless of the result, they return to camp together before morning [2][3].

The next day, the player character may speak with her about the previous night. Her dialogue depends on her level of approval and what occurred (or did not) the night before.

Alternatively, if her approval is raised quickly enough, a new dialog choice will appear; "I can't help but feel like you and I might have missed a chance to connect. Truly connect." Selecting this allows the above scene to happen earlier, on the first night where no other cutscenes are queued, once the Long Rest begins.

If Lae'zel is first romanced, Shadowheart cannot be unless Lae'zel's romance is ended first. Although there is at least one exception to this rule [4]

If romanced by a Selûnite cleric, unique conversation options are available with Shadowheart. For example, at Grymforge, the player character may obtain an Idol of Shar. If given to her by a Selûnite cleric, an unusual romance cut-scene may occur [5]

Act 2

In the Shadow-Cursed Lands, the player character can find a Night Orchid to give to Shadowheart.

The Gauntlet of Shar is an important divergence in Shadowheart's romance.

Act 3: Sharran

If Shadowheart kills the Nightsong, she becomes imbued with Shar's power and becomes noticeably colder and distant. She informs the player character that Shar is her priority, but says body is still at their disposal.

Later, she invites the player character to a Selûnite shrine. She reveals that she saved the blood that splattered on her clothing, body and hair from killing the Nightsong. Using it to desecrate the shrine, she relishes in the act.

Act 3: Non-Sharran

If Shadowheart spares the Nightsong, she admits her relationship with the player character is been something she has been consciously ignoring in favor of her faith, and asks if they want to make that relationship more serious.

Some time after, she invites them to go swimming alone with her. After dialogue, the camera pans away as the two share an intimate time.

Shadowheart will also ask the player character to come with her to a Selunite statue. If she chose to kill her parents, she grieves their loss. If she rescued them, she sobs that she does not deserve to be anyone's daughter for the actions she committed in Shar's name, only for her parents to reassure her that they love her and she will always be their daughter. As of Patch 6, either outcome gives the player character the option to comfort her crying with a hug.

Some time later, she talks about the future she hopes to have after getting rid of the Absolute. If her parents are saved, she talks about her desire to live in a rural cottage surrounded by animals with the player by her side.

Notes

  1. While several conversation paths are available, most do not result in gaining or losing approval with Shadowheart, unless abruptly leaving the evening conversation.
  2. If the insight check for realizing Shadowheart's expectation is failed, or the player character chooses to ignore her invitation, approval is lost and a conversation [!] icon appears above her after the long rest. If then spoken to with certain conversation options, she reveals disappointment and states she was almost certain she was going to be kissed.
  3. If kissed during their first romantic evening, a conversation [!] icon appears above Shadowheart after the long rest. If the prior night is addressed with certain conversation options, she admits it was important to her and contemplates the implications of what could be her first romantic relationship; she confesses, "You mean a lot to me."
  4. Normally, the player character cannot have even the beginning stages of romance with Shadowheart and Lae'zel, unless Shadowheart is selected first and the evening cut-scene with her has not yet occurred. However, if the party elected to save the tieflings from the goblin raid at the Grove, the tiefling night celebration presents a unique opportunity to start romance with up to three companions at once. If the player character is not actively romancing any companion, and approval with other companions is high enough, the night celebration dialogue is scripted to allow the player character the opportunity to start a romance with one of any of their companions (but only one), even if previously refused (but not one already ended). This is because, at the night celebration, a check is only made for the prior occurrence of at least one evening romance cut-scene with a(nother) companion. If none has, the player character may start a third beginning romance here.
  5. After being given the Idol of Shar by the player character as a Selûnite cleric, and being challenged to "Kiss me like you hate me", one of Shadowheart's possible responses includes teasing the player character with the promise of a kiss as she slowly circles them from behind, kissing them a few times on their backside, before finally sharing a passionate kiss face-to-face.
