Zariel is a fallen angel and the archdevil ruler of Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells. As such, she's a key player in the Blood War. Zariel Tieflings descend from bloodlines affected by Zariel, and Karlach (an Origin) has freshly escaped her grasp.
Zariel did not appear in the game's Early Access, but her presence was still felt through various underlings. Commander Zhalk mentions her when threatening his minions, and a group of fallen Paladins in Zariel's service can be found hunting Karlach.
